Diseases without borders

Activity one can be made more accessible through the use of flash cards with the key words and explanation. Download these in MS word format.

Some groups may find Activity Two easier by filling in a table summarising all of the countries. Download the table here.

Download possible answers to put in the table here.

Further discussion can lead into a variety of topics including access to health care (see 'The right to health care' pages 10-11, and further class discussions on tourism and travel).

A very good website to use to see the global spread of certain diseases is the World Health Organisation one. Using the website, ask the students to map the distribution of the diseases featured on this page. What are the differences in distribution between the different diseases? What might be the reasons behind these patterns? (Travel and tourism, drug resistance, economic development, climate etc).
