Africa is the second largest continent after Asia and with a population of more than 900,000,000 people, it accounts for nearly 14% of the world's population.
Today Africa is made up of 53 countries, which mostly still have their borders drawn from during the era of European colonisation. The main issues currently troubling Africa are civil wars, poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which have orphaned so many children in Africa.
SOS Children have produced this 16 page resource on Africa (word document nearly 2M to download): Africa Fact Sheets.
