[ Annual Report 2001 – 2002 ] Global Eye

Our award-winning educational resource on global issues

One of the real strengths of Global Eye is the quality of the images chosen. The questions raised are stimulating and wide ranging, requiring pupils to empathise with local people and to consider the impact of their own actions.
PGCE Tutor, Middlesex University

By any measure this has been the most successful year yet for Global Eye. Building on its previous awards from the Geographical Association, the magazine has received an increasing number of commendations from teachers in all regions and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as positive reviews in national professional journals. The most recent survey of schools selected at random found that no less than 95% rated Global Eye as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ (65% excellent).

Global Eye magazine has proved to be an invaluable resource with our classes at a variety of levels. It appears to be universally popular with students of all abilities as it covers topical issues in a bright and eye-catching way, but still in the amount of depth needed at AS level whilst still making it accessible to the younger reader.
Head of Geography, Bedford High School

In Global Eye we have continued to present material that is topical, well researched and relevant to the school curriculum. One important aspect this year has been a conscious broadening of its appeal to subjects other than geography, so that it can add a global dimension to lessons in economics, business studies and PSHE, for example. It is also a valuable tool in helping teachers address the new requirements for citizenship across the curriculum.

During the year we have covered issues such as globalisation and trade, sustainable food production, the impact of tourism, ecosystems management, street children and reproductive health needs. We have also focused on countries including South Africa, The Philippines, St Lucia, and Brazil.

Fantastic resource for KS3, KS4 and AS/A2 – how could I teach without it?

The Global Eye Website
Another measure of our success has been the continuing rapid increase in use of the Global Eye website, which is home to the fully interactive versions of both secondary and primary editions of the resource. The site has seen a further seven-fold growth in use this year to a level of just under 600,000 hits per month, regarded as highly impressive by educational publishing standards. An evaluation of the primary Global Eye website by the independent education consultants TEEM has given it a first-class report, especially commending its interactive and visual nature, ease of use, and its comprehensive curriculum-based content.

The Future
We have been privileged to have the support of the Department for International Development for the first six years of Global Eye’s life. Sadly, we were notified during the year that DFID’s changing policies regarding support for development education meant that funding would cease. We are seeking alternative arrangements to ensure its continuation as a highly-respected and well-used resource.
