Campaign to Keep Global Issues on Free-to-Air TV

In the era of globalisation, when world events and processes affect every aspect of our lives, we need more than ever to understand the world around us. In order to ensure everyone has access to global issues through universally available broadcasts, we must work to resist any proposals which will be likely to allow broadcasters to reduce coverage of these vital issues.

New government legislation – the Communications Bill – is about to reform the broadcasting industry, along with the internet and telecommunications, for the digital age. There is a fear that broadcasters will no longer be obliged to provide sustained, imaginative and high quality international programming.

Worldaware has joined with the UK’s other leading international development and environment charities in a coalition (The Third World and Environment Broadcasting Project, known as 3WE) to ensure that the new Bill, and the new regulator it will establish, serve the interests of UK citizens – not just those of the commercial industries – by making global knowledge and understanding a priority.

Worldaware‘s Director has written to Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to press the case for sensible legislation. [ Click here to read the letter ] Worldaware encourages all who share in our mission to promote greater understanding of global issues, especially among young people, to write in similar terms to the Secretary of State.

Please visit the 3WE site for up-to-date information about the campaign.
