International
Development Committee: The Committee has decided to conduct
an inquiry entitled ‘HIV/Aids and Social and Economic Development’.
For details of the themes of the inquiry which broadly covers;
the ‘impact of HIV/Aids on developing countries’ and the ‘response
to the effects of HIV/Aids on developing countries’ visit

Africa
Confidential: To mark 40 years of Africa Confidential, a one-day
conference and reception is being held in association with the
Centre of African Studies. The event, entitled ‘Africa in the
2000’s: politics, money, war and peace’, will take place at the
Brunei Gallery at the School of Oriental & African Studies
on Wednesday 19th April. Speakers include African politicians,
senior officials from the World Bank, United Nations, Organisation
of African Unity and Western governments. Discussions will focus
on four broad topics: does democracy boost economic growth?; are
Africa’s relations with the West getting better or worse?; are
there any benefits from the growing privatisation of African security
and military organisations? Is Africa’s state system undergoing
irreversible change and what will replace it? For programme information

Overseas
Development Institute: The ODI is holding a series of meetings
focusing on ‘The Agenda for Global Institutional Reform: Next
Steps for Developing Countries’. The meetings will tackle the
following themes:
Corporate
citizenship in the 21st century: What can business do for peace
and sustainable development?: 2-5 May 2000. A public forum
is to be held on 2 May between 6-9pm and a residential forum will

Foreign
Affairs Committee: Evidence will be taken from Peter Hain
MP, Minister of State, FCO, focusing on the situation in Zimbabwe
