International Development Committee: The Committee has decided to conduct an inquiry entitled ‘HIV/Aids and Social and Economic Development’. For details of the themes of the inquiry which broadly covers; the ‘impact of HIV/Aids on developing countries’ and the ‘response to the effects of HIV/Aids on developing countries’ visit

Africa Confidential: To mark 40 years of Africa Confidential, a one-day conference and reception is being held in association with the Centre of African Studies. The event, entitled ‘Africa in the 2000’s: politics, money, war and peace’, will take place at the Brunei Gallery at the School of Oriental & African Studies on Wednesday 19th April. Speakers include African politicians, senior officials from the World Bank, United Nations, Organisation of African Unity and Western governments. Discussions will focus on four broad topics: does democracy boost economic growth?; are Africa’s relations with the West getting better or worse?; are there any benefits from the growing privatisation of African security and military organisations? Is Africa’s state system undergoing irreversible change and what will replace it? For programme information or to book a place go to

Overseas Development Institute: The ODI is holding a series of meetings focusing on ‘The Agenda for Global Institutional Reform: Next Steps for Developing Countries’. The meetings will tackle the following themes:

  • Thursday 27 April, ‘Services: opportunities and new regulations
    Speakers: David Harrison, Centre for Leisure & Tourism, University of North London; Mina Mashagekhi, UNCTAD.
  • Wednesday 3 May, ‘The international financial system and developing countries‘ (1.30pm)
    Speakers: Peter Kenen, Princeton University; Benu Schneider, International Economic Development Group, ODI
  • Thursday 11 May, ‘Do developing countries need special and differential treatment
    Speakers: Chris Stevens, Institute of Development Studies and other speaker to be confirmed.
  • Thursday 18 May, ‘The international role and regulation of companies‘ (1.30pm)
    Speakers: John Humphrey, Institute of Development Studies; Jacob Werksmann, Trade and Sustainable Development, SOAS.
  • Wednesday 24 May, ‘Globalisation and poverty
    Speakers: Alan Winters, Uni. of Sussex; Henri Bernard Solignac Lecomte, International Economic Development Group, ODI
  • Wednesday 31 May, ‘The interface between the humanitarian and the political agendas
    Speakers: Mark Bowden, FCO; Joanna Macrae, Humanitarian Policy Group, ODI
  • Wednesday 7 June, ‘Global institutions and developing countries
    Speakers: David Batt, Director, International Economic Policy, DFID; Peter Tulloch, Director, Development Division, WTO; and Ngaire Woods, University College, University of Oxford.

Corporate citizenship in the 21st century: What can business do for peace and sustainable development?: 2-5 May 2000.
