South Summit: The heads of government or state of the Group of 77 developing countries met in Cuba on 10-14 April 2000 to discuss global inequality. The summit represented a new beginning for the South’s involvement in global governance and a determination to effect major changes to the global system was evident. Globalisation was among the subjects discussed, about which the Algerian President, representing the Organisation of African Unity, said that it was a system devised by the North for their own interests.
