Came into existence as Education Unit of
Voluntary Committee on Overseas Aid and
Development, a consortium of voluntary
agencies.

1977
|
Reconstituted, following winding up of VCOAD, as
an independent charity, the Centre for World
Development Education, fully funded by the Ministry
of Overseas Development.

1979
|
Public spending cuts obliged the organisation to
begin fundraising.
|
|
1981
|
Her Majesty The Queen became Patron.
|
|
1992
|
Name changed to Worldaware, but aims and
constitution unaltered.

1960s
|
First teachers’ handbook, ‘The Development
Puzzle’ (ran to 7 editions).
Pamphlet for general reading, ‘Power to End
Poverty’ sold over 30,000 copies in four
months.

1970s
|
Film, ‘The Survival Game’, shown in schools on
average twice a day over three years.
Journalists’ handbook, ‘Who to ask about developing
countries’.
Convened Fourth Channel Development Education
Group, which subsequently became the International
Broadcasting Trust, a TV production company.

1980s
|
Tape-slide programme, ‘Facing up to change:
Britain and the Brandt Report’, shown to 900
audiences in a year.
Produced ‘Sand Harvest’, first computer software
for schools on development issues.
Launched World
Development Awards for Business.

1990s
|
Published primary and secondary school resources
to meet requirements of National Curriculum
Geography.
Launched quarterly, ‘Business
Worldaware‘.
Organised Travel
Grants scheme for local radio stations.
Set up Worldaware
Business Group on Public Policy for
Development. Publish ‘Global
Eye‘ magazine on behalf of the Department for
International Development.
